Persistence and Recurrence in Atmospheric Circulation

چکیده
We report preliminary results of an eeort to use variants of the Hidden Markov Models developed by speech researchers to characterize persistence and recurrence of atmospheric circulation patterns in a 36 year record of Northern Hemisphere 700-mb geopotential heights. Using a cross validation scheme, we t autoregressive hidden Markov models (ARHMMs) with a range of complexities , varying the autoregressive order and the number of hidden states. As the autoregressive order increases from zero to four, the optimal number of hidden states decreases from more than eight to one, i.e., simple autoregressive models are better than multi-state models when the autoregressive order is at least four. We believe that the failure to nd regime-like behavior is an artifact of a temporal low-pass lter used in preprocessing the data and that more careful work is indicated.

Winter to winter recurrence of atmospheric circulation anomalies over East Asia and its impact on winter surface air temperature anomalies
The persistence of atmospheric circulation anomalies over East Asia shows a winter to winter recurrence (WTWR) phenomenon. Seasonal variations in sea level pressure anomalies and surface wind anomalies display significantly different characteristics between WTWR and non-WTWR years. The WTWR years are characterized by the recurrence of both a strong (weak) anomalous Siberian High and an East Asi...

Atmospheric circulation is important to determine the surface climate and environment, and affect regional climate and surface features. In this study, to quantify its effect, the classification system, developed by Lamb is applied to obtain circulation information for Ardabil, North West Province in Iran, on a daily basis, and is a method to classify synoptic weather for study area. For that p...

This study has used TOMS AI as well as the reanalysis dataset of thirty-four years (1979-2012) to investigate the influence of atmospheric circulation on dust transport during the Harmattan period in West Africa, using Aerosol Index (AI) data, obtained from various satellite sensors. Changes in Inter-Tropical Discontinuity (ITD), Sea Surface Temperature (SST) over the Gulf of Guinea, and North ...
متن کاملAutumn Rainfall Anomalies and Regional Atmospheric Circulation along Establishment of Weak La Nina after Strong El Nino in Iran
To study the Iran precipitation anomaly in September to November of 2016 and its probable connection with ENSO (El Nino-Southern Oscillation). This period with similar cases in the previous 55 years (1964, 1983, and 1995 according to forecasting center of NOAA) was investigated. In all cases, ENSO changed from strong El-Nino to weak La-Nina after a very brief neutral period. In the following, o...
متن کاملInvestigation of the atmospheric circulation anomalies associated with extreme rainfall events over the Coastal West Africa
This study investigates the atmospheric circulation associated with extreme rainfall events over the coastal West Africa. The rainfall data of this study were obtained from the Global Precipitation Climatology Centre (GPCC), spanning from 1981 to 2010. The atmospheric datasets were also obtained from the ERA-Interim reanalysis. The study employed the Z-Index to categorize dry and wet years into...
